Doctor Sleep is a 2019 supernatural horror film written and directed by Mike Flanagan and the sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980). The film is adapted from Stephen King’s 2013 novel of the same name (which itself is a sequel to the original novel released in 1977) and takes place many years after the events of the previous film. Ewan McGregor stars as Dan Torrance, a man plagued by psychic abilities and haunted by a traumatic childhood experience at the Overlook Hotel. In addition to McGregor, new characters are played by Rebecca Ferguson, Kelly Curran and Cliff Curtis, who join forces with Dan to take on Hat Rose and her group of followers.

A film adaptation of Doctor Sleep was developed by Warner Bros. Pictures shortly after the 2013 novel was published. Although writer-producer Akiva Goldsman originally penned the script, the project didn’t receive a budget until it became a huge success at Warner Bros. Pictures. However, some critics criticized its lengthy two-and-a-half-hour length. Although Doctor Sleep grossed $72.3 million worldwide, its box office performance was considered somewhat lackluster compared to other Stephen King adaptations released in 2019, such as It Chapter Two and Pet Sematary.

Sleep Doctor ending explained

In the climactic finale of Doctor Sleep, Dan dies along with the Overlook Hotel. However, he continued to exist in spirit form and established a means of communication with Abra, similar to how Dick Halloran had mentored him in the past. Dan becomes Abra’s guide, urging her to embrace her own light and face the darkness around her.

When Abra’s mother entered her room, she asked who Abra was talking to. Initially, Abra chose to lie and claim she didn’t talk to anyone. However, she immediately followed Dan’s advice and decided to be honest with her mother. Abra admitted to talking to Dan and even mentioned her ability to communicate with her late father.

In the final scene, it becomes clear that despite the hotel being destroyed by fire, the old woman in room 237 has managed to survive. However, Abra, armed with knowledge of box magic, took action. She enters the bathroom and uses her psychic abilities to lock the old woman away, effectively neutralizing the threat.

This ending showcases Abra’s transformation as she embraces her own powers, and showcases her ability to face and overcome the lingering remnants of darkness. It symbolizes her growth and resilience in the face of supernatural challenges, giving the audience a sense of closure and satisfaction.

Still haunted by the traumatic events at the Overlook Hotel in 1980, Dan Torrance is guided by the ghost of Dick Hallorann. Together, they devise a plan to capture the haunting ghosts on the Overlook by placing them in lockboxes. Fast forward to 2011, Dan began using alcohol to suppress his psychic ability, known as “The Shining.” In a new town in New Hampshire, he found solace and recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous, organized by his new friend Billy Freeman. Dan became a hospice caregiver, using his light to provide comfort to dying patients, earning the nickname “Doctor Sleep.”

Meanwhile, a cult called the True Knot, led by Rose the Hat, relies on the “steam” of light released through torture and murder to survive. In 2019, True Knot’s struggle to find enough motivation led to them brutally murdering a young boy. Radiant young girl Abra Stone discovers this horrific act and contacts Dan telepathically for help. However, Rose was aware of Abra’s existence and launched a psychic attack, but fell into the trap set by Abra, causing physical harm.

Rose orders the remaining members of the True Knot to capture Abra to gain her powers. Abra reveals to Dan about the True Knot and is initially skeptical, but is eventually convinced to intervene. Dan enlists the help of Billy and Abra’s father, Dave, to fight the cult. They managed to eliminate most of the True Knot except for Rose. Unfortunately, Billy and Dave were killed in the process, and Abra was captured by Rose’s accomplice, Crow Daddy. Dan uses his light to enter Abra’s mind, rescues her, and eliminates Papa Crow.

Desperate to protect Abra, Dan takes her to the dormant Overlook Hotel and activates the boiler to awaken her evil spirit. In a fierce battle, Rose defeats Dan, but Dan releases the ghost into her. The spirit overwhelms and consumes Rose, then turns its attention to Dan, attempting to possess him and manipulate him to harm Abra. However, Abra manages to temporarily break through Dan’s control, urging him to save himself. Dan regains control and heads to the boiler room to stop the hotel from overpowering him. As Dan falls unconscious, he sees a vision of his mother, Wendy, comforting him as a child.

When the Overlook Hotel burned down, Abra escaped and authorities arrived on the scene. After some time, Abra communicates with Dan’s spirit, assuring him of her health. Dan comforts Abra, encouraging her to embrace her ability to shine and not hide it from the world. Abra told her mother that she had been in contact with Dan and her late father, assuring them that they were okay. In one final encounter, Abra confronts the ghost of Mrs. Macy in the bathtub, bravely confronting the entity and closing the door behind her.
