All 9 Upcoming A24 Horror Movies

Summary

  • Here is a list of upcoming A24 horror films and their release dates:
  • MaXXXine – July 5, 2024
  • The Front Room – September 6, 2024

There are at least nine upcoming A24 horror movies that are set to release or begin production in the foreseeable future. A24 has solidified itself as the leader and standard of trending independent cinema and also one of the most reliable producers and distributors of original horror content. Some of the best A24 horror movies that have already been released include Ari Aster’s modern masterpiecesMidsommar (2019) and Hereditary (2018), Robert Eggers’ outstanding horror films The Lighthouse (2019) and The Witch (2016), and Yorgos Lanthimos’ complex and unsettling The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017).

A24 first started venturing into the horror genre with the 2014 films Enemy, directed by Denis Villeneuve, and Under the Skin, directed by Jonathan Glazer. While neither of the films are true horror movies, with Enemy being more of a psychological thriller and Under the Skin a sci-fi suspense story, both films marked a change in trajectory for the production company that had previously been known for young adult films such as Spring Breakers, The Bling Ring, and The Spectacular Now, all of which were released in 2013. A24’s first true horror film was The Witch, followed by Green Room in 2016.

A24 rose to new levels of prestige after Moonlight won Best Picture at the unforgettable 89th Academy Awards in 2017. Moonlight was also the first film that A24 produced in-house and ignited a renaissance of instant modern classics such as Lady Bird (2017), which earned five Oscar nominations, Eighth Grade (2018), which earned a near-perfect 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, Uncut Gems (2019), which arguably features the best performance of Adam Sandler’s career, and Everything, Everywhere, All At Once (2022), which won seven Oscars including Best Picture. There is also an exciting slate of A24 movies releasing in 2024 that span across all genres.

Directed by Michael Philippou and Danny Philippou, the brotherly duo who directed A24’s 2022 horror film Talk to Me, Bring Her Back is another upcoming A24 horror film that is currently in production. The film will star Sally Hawkins, the Oscar-nominated actress best known for her role in Guillermo del Toro’s Best Picture winner The Shape of Water (2017). Hawkins was recently seen as Willy’s mother in Wonka (2023). The upcoming horror movie will be the second collaboration between A24 and the Philippou brothers, although there is also the confirmed development of a Talk to Me sequel in the work aptly titled Talk 2 Me. While the plot for Bring Her Back is being kept under wraps, the film began production in June 2024 and should also receive an anticipated release date in 2025.

While trying to cope with the death of her mother, Mia (Sophie Wilde) becomes enthralled with an embalmed hand that can conjure spirits. While Mia and her group of friends get a thrill out of communicating with spirits, things go too far when Mia doesn’t close the door to the other side.

Director Danny Philippou , Michael Philippou Release Date July 28, 2023 Distributor(s) A24 Writers Bill Hinzman , Danny Philippou Cast Sophie Wilde , Joe Bird , Alexandra Jensen , Otis Dhanji , Miranda Otto , Marcus Johnson Runtime 94 minutes Expand

A sequel to Talk to Me from A24 and the Philippou brothers is confirmed to be in development, although with the Philippou brothers currently in production on Bring Her Back, it’s highly unlikely that Talk 2 Me will be released before 2026 at the earliest. There is speculation that the Philippou brothers shot extra footage during the production of Talk to Me that would at least establish the foundation for the sequel, but none of that information was made available to the public. If the Philippou brothers did make a follow-up to Talk to Me, which was a box office smash earning over $92 million on a $4.5 million production budget, it would become A24’s second original horror franchise following the success of Ti West’s “X” trilogy. The status of Talk 2 Me could be contingent on the success and acclaim of Bring Her Back.

3 The Looming

In Development

The Looming

The Looming is an upcoming horror film based on a short film of the same name and concept. A24 is teaming up once again with the producers of Hereditary and Talk to Me to bring a feature-length version of The Looming to the big screen. The Looming was first conceptualized as a short film by Masha Ko that had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. According to Deadline, The Looming offers “A horrific glimpse into aging and the fear of being forgotten by those we love, Ko’s film tells the story of Chester (Joseph Lopez), a 70-year-old man who begins hearing strange noises in his home. Although he seeks help from his daughter and coworkers, they dismiss his concerns. But when Luna (Brianne Buishas), his home audio assistant, detects the sounds, Chester realizes that it has not all been in his head.”

2 Untitled Backrooms Film

Back in 2023, A24 announced that they were teaming up with online creator Kane Pixels, known by his real name as Kane Parsons, to create a feature-length version of his viral short film The Backrooms (Found Footage). Kane Pixels made a popular series of Backrooms content in 2022 that garnered the attention of A24 as well as 59 million viewers on the original video. While news on the Backrooms A24 film had been relatively quiet following the initial announcement, Kane Pixels has confirmed on a recent internet livestream that the project is still in development and they are currently aiming for a 2025 release date, but no other information has been provided.

1 Untitled Trey Edwards Shults Film

In Development

Close

While the untitled Trey Edwards Shults movie is not officially confirmed to be a horror, casting Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan in a movie that doesn’t belong in the horror genre seems like a total abomination. Shults, who directed the A24 horror It Comes At Night (2017) starring Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott, and Riley Keough, is currently working on another feature film under the A24 umbrella. Again, it’s unconfirmed whether the upcoming project is actually a horror movie, but it was conceptualized by Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, whose recent music videos have heavily leaned into the horror space. Tesfaye, Keoghan, and Ortega onscreen together in a Trey Edwards Shults production sounds like another classic A24 movie in the making.
